It’s that time of year, when teams, scouts and fans are making and re-making their NBA mock drafts. Mock Drafts are a great way to help fans and analysts understand what teams are thinking. This is not an attempt to rank players, but rather an attempt to look ahead to the first overall selection. The idea is to project the current talent available and match it up to possible NBA teams. Each mock draft has been updated through Day 2 of the NCAA March Madness Tournament. Philadelphia 76ers This mock draft will try and stay focused on the big picture. So we won’t include every mock draft article and only look ahead. The two big names in this draft are Ben Simmons and Markelle Fultz. The Sixers need to find that point guard to run the show so this year we project the best of the guards. This comes down to De’Aaron Fox and Lonzo Ball. Fox gets the edge as an elite scorer, a good defender and a very capable ball handler and passer. Ball has the better numbers, but we’re higher on Fox. The Sixers need the new infusion of talent to help the team to a playoff birth. With Ben Simmons off to Orlando they need the next great point guard in the NBA. Los Angeles Lakers If you follow Bleacher Report you’ll notice that Chris Ballard has Simmons ranked as the number one point guard in the draft class. We love De’Aaron Fox here, but that’s not how the Lakers and Lakers fans see it. The Sixers and Simmons are a match made in heaven and Fox is a no brainer in this draft. However, if the Lakers trade for Anthony Davis, we expect them to take him as the best player in this draft. That means the Lakers draft the best player in this draft. They also own both the second and third pick in the draft. When it comes to the second pick we actually think we have an edge on other publications with our projections. So here’s our take: Ball is the best player in this draft, but he’s not the top talent. The top talent is Fultz, and when it comes to getting off of the bench, we actually see Lonzo Ball having a better NBA future. We think he has a higher floor and higher ceiling. Ball has better three point shooting, shot creating, and play making. The question with Ball is who are you drafting? Is this simply a guy who is going to be a role player for the foreseeable future, or are you drafting a superstar in Lonzo Ball? This isn’t a question to take lightly, as the Lakers have to account for LeBron James’ potential opt-out and the draft night trade with the Pelicans if Davis comes to LA.
