FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Colorado State women's tennis team put on an impressive match against UC Davis, winning 8-1 in the first round of the Mountain West tournament on Thursday at the Aztec Tennis Center. The top two doubles teams of Tami Longo and Hannah Scharff and Alexis Castaneda and Megan Wargo advanced to the quarterfinals, where they will face each other in a rematch of the quarterfinals from last year's NCAA Championships. Longo and Scharff will take on Mika Hoshino and Shuko Takahashi, while Castaneda and Wargo will square off against Kelly Tanaka and Kelly Sisk. The lone other doubles team to advance out of the opening round was Katelyn Coughlan and Sarah Peterson, who will take on Longo and Scharff in the quarterfinals. Coughlan and Peterson came back from a set down to defeat Emily Smith and Ashley O'Kane of UC Irvine 8-7(5) to open their match. The CSU volleyball team held its annual "Meet the Mavs" on Saturday night, when the Mavs volleyball team hosted the Fort Collins High School volleyball team. The event consisted of a game between the Fort Collins teams as well as a panel of judges who selected three MVP awards. The panel included coaches from CSU and Fort Collins High School. CSU won five awards, including two MVP awards, and Fort Collins took home two MVP awards, with Paige Shrader named Offensive Player of the Year and Nicole Greska named Defensive Player of the Year. The volleyball team was also voted the Team of the Year at the event. Junior Paige Shrader tallied 12 kills, six blocks and one ace, while senior Megan Wolfe went for a team-high 18 kills and seven blocks. Sophomore Kara Baker recorded four blocks and also added 12 kills and four aces. Both Baker and Wolfe were named to the All-Tournament Team. The Mavs also had four players named to the All-Tournament Team, along with two players named to the Academic All-Mountain West Team. Off the court, senior Laura Baca was named to the Academic All-Mountain West Team and senior Gabby Guillen was named to the Fall College Athlete Leadership Award. The Mavs are 3-2 on the season and 1-1 in the Mountain West after beating Fresno State and New Mexico on the road. Fort Collins 7, CSU 1The CSU wrestling team went down the wire with conference opponent Fort Collins, but ended up losing the final match of the day, 33-13. The Rams took a 5-3 lead into the second period before winning four bouts to take a 16-7 lead heading into the final period. Fort Collins rallied in the second half, scoring six of the final nine points to complete the sweep. Freshman Logan Storrs earned the first major for the Rams with a major decision over Alex Hoyt of Fort Collins. Men's soccer drops two at homeCollegian Staff Report In their first home match of the season, the Colorado State men's soccer team dropped two tough contests against Pac-12 opponent California on Sunday and Sunday. The Cougars were able to get past CSU in two games, one by a score of 3-1 and the other by a score of 2-0. On the first day, the Cougars earned a goal in the second minute to lead 1-0 and scored again to take the 1-0 lead after an own goal in the 48th minute. The Rams would not give up, though, and pulled even with a goal of their own in the 73rd minute. CSU ended up losing to California in the 78th minute after a late goal by Cal. Sunday's match would turn out to be a similar story as California took a 2-0 lead in the first half with goals in the 31st minute and the 47th minute. Colorado State was able to come back and score their only goal of the game in the 58th minute as they trailed 2-1 heading into halftime. Both CSU goals were scored by freshman Alex Bono, who recorded an assist on the goal in the 58th minute to put the Rams in the lead. The Rams went on to lose 2-1 in the second half. CSU was able to get off to a hot start in Sunday's match as they scored early in the first half. After earning a corner kick in the fifth minute of play, junior Tomasz Zuberbier took the shot and put CSU on the board first with a goal at the nine-minute mark of the game. Cal, however, would respond quickly as they scored to tie the game in the 10th minute of play. The Rams would hold off Cal and earn a shot from freshman Jake Keener in the 15th minute of play as the team was able to tie up the game 1-1 heading into halftime. California would go on to take the lead early in the second half after the Rams took a foul on a Cal player and earned a penalty. The Cougars ended up taking advantage and scoring their first goal of the game in the 31st minute. Again the Rams fought back, though, and got on the board with a goal in the 43rd minute of play. After CSU held Cal off for the remainder of the half, the Rams headed into halftime with a tie game. CSU's defense was strong early on as they stopped Cal from taking a shot on goal for the next two minutes, but was also stopped in the 54th minute of play. The CSU offense went back to work after that, however, as they earned a corner kick and had Bono take a shot for his second goal of the match. Cal, however, would score their second goal of the match to tie up the game 2-2 and hold off CSU for the remainder of the game. Junior Jake Keener had one goal on three shots for the Rams. Men's water polo edges CSU in OTGolf Country Senior Staff Report For the second time in five years, the Colorado State men's water polo team will compete in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation National Championships. The Rams are led by head coach Alex Magallanes and have four seniors on this year's roster. The 2016 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation National Championships will be held in Reno, Nevada, this year. It is the second year in a row CSU will compete in Reno. Last year the Rams finished ninth in the 13-team event, which included such teams as California, Hawai'i, Pepperdine, Stanford and USC. Last week, CSU played a pair of non-conference games to open the season. The Rams were able to overcome an opponent with seven losses and took down a team from the Big West Conference. In a hard fought contest against UC Irvine, CSU fell in overtime, 9-7. Both teams scored five goals in regulation, but the Anteaters scored an extra-man goal to beat the Rams in overtime. The Rams were able to pick up the win on the road at Cal State Bakersfield, 16-7. They were led by senior Tim Schnugg and sophomore Alex Nussbaum. On the defensive side, CSU got a huge performance from sophomore goalie Jack Tews. With the final score being 16-7, he stopped 17 out of 18 shots, and also put up eight saves to give his team a win. The final part of the team's schedule is their match against Pepperdine at home on Oct. 1. Soccer takes two from ArizonaCollege of St. Benedictan Staff Report A hot streak continued on Saturday as the men's soccer team scored three goals in their first three games, winning two of them. Their first game of the weekend ended in a 2-0 victory against Northern Colorado. The team continued their success on Saturday, as they defeated another team from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. They defeated Colorado School of Mines, 4-0, to increase their streak to six games. This streak includes victories over Northern Colorado and Colorado School of Mines. The Rams have not lost since early-July. The Rams ended their three game winning streak against Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday. After dropping their first game in three games against UC San Diego, the team was able to get the three points against the Roadrunners. The Rams' next games are against CSU Bakersfield on Saturday, Oct. 1, and San Francisco State on Oct. 15.
